There are also two other bursae located on either side of your kneecap; however, they do not get inflamed as often as their counterpart does because they do not move as much when bending or straightening your leg

Types of Knee Bursa

Subcutaneous - located directly under your skin, such as the bursa that sits between your kneecap and thighbone (patellar tendon). This type of bursa can become inflamed due to repetitive friction or trauma.

Intra-articular - located inside joints, such as those found in your shoulders or hips. Inflammation here is usually caused by injury or infection from bacteria entering through a break in the synovial membrane lining around the joint capsule where it meets bone

The Main Knee Bursa

The prepatellar bursa can become inflamed if you have frequent knee problems such as jumping or running too much. This can lead to pain around your patella (kneecap).

Infrapatellar Bursa

The infrapatellar bursa is located just below the knee cap, between the skin and tendon of the quadriceps muscle. It's a fluid-filled sac that helps reduce friction between these two surfaces. Infrapatellar bursitis can occur when there is an injury to either one of these structures, causing inflammation or swelling in this space. This can be caused by direct trauma to your knee or simply overuse due to repetitive movements such as running or jumping on hard surfaces repeatedly without adequate rest in between workouts.

Pes Anserine Bursa

The pes anserine bursa is a fluid-filled sac that lies between the tibia and the tendon of the semitendinosus muscle. The pes anserine bursa helps to cushion your knee as it moves during walking or running.

The main symptoms of bursitis include:

Aching pain in your lower backside or upper thigh when walking up stairs or hills; more severe cases can cause pain while sitting down too long with bent knees

Suprapatellar bursa.

The suprapatellar bursa is located on the front of your knee, directly above your patella. It's connected to your patella by a small pocket allowing movement between the two bones. The suprapatellar bursa can become infected if bacteria enter through cuts or tears in your skin around or under it, causing inflammation and swelling.

As you can see, there are five different types of bursa that can develop in or around your knee joint. Each one serves a different purpose and location within the joint itself.

When these bursae become irritated or inflamed, they can cause a painful condition called bursitis.

Causes of Bursitis

Treatments for Bursitis

The following exercises are designed to improve range of motion, strength, and flexibility around your knee joint.

✔️Use a foam roller.

Foam rollers are a great tool for improving your flexibility and relieving pain. They're also useful for pre- and post-workout massage, as well as following any activity that causes inflammation in the knee area.

The most common way to use a foam roller is by lying prone on top of it, with both feet firmly planted on the floor. Slowly roll back and forth over each quadriceps muscle (the front thigh muscles), moving from just above the kneecap down toward your ankle so you cover all areas of concern. If you find an especially tight spot, hold still for 30 seconds or longer before continuing on with other areas of concern until all four quadriceps muscles have been massaged thoroughly.

Knee range of motion exercises are a great way to improve your knee function. They can help you feel better, reduce pain, and improve the range of motion in your knee.

Place one hand on top of your thigh, and use your other hand to pull back on your toes until you feel a stretch along the front of your shinbone (tibia). Hold this position for 20 seconds, then relax for 10 seconds before repeating three times.

✔️Strengthening exercises

Strengthening exercises are done in the morning and evening. The exercise should be performed in a pain-free range of motion three times daily for 30 minutes each time.

Exercise:

Standing quadriceps stretch (knee straight) with strap
Supine leg press (with heel extended)
Supine hip flexor stretch (leg at 90 degrees)

✔️Balance and flexibility exercises

Stretching is an important factor in preventing and reducing knee pain. Stretches should be performed before and after activity, as well as at bedtime if your symptoms are severe enough to warrant it. The best way to stretch is by gradually increasing the range of motion until you feel mild discomfort (not pain), then holding this position for 10-30 seconds before slowly returning to starting position.

Stretching should be done at least three times per day: once in the morning, once after lunch or dinner, and again before going to bed if possible (or at least every other night). It's also helpful to stretch frequently throughout the day...you can even do some gentle movements while sitting at your desk!

Strengthen the muscles around your knees. This can help to prevent further injury and pain as well as reducing swelling and stiffness, which are often associated with bursitis. The exercises below will strengthen your quadriceps, hamstrings and calf muscles.
