What Common Injuries are seen in the Construction Sector

Construction is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. It's not just physical dangers that can hurt you, either....construction workers are also at risk of being exposed to toxic chemicals and injuries on site. So it's essential to understand what types of injuries are common in construction and how they happen.

Sprains and strains

👉Sprains and strains are common injuries in the construction industry. They often result from lifting heavy loads, repetitive movements and overuse of muscles.

👉 Sprains cause pain, swelling, bruising and loss of function in the affected area while strains typically only cause pain with no other symptoms.

👉Sprains and strains can be treated by rest, ice, (wrapping a cold pack around your ankle) elevation (keeping your foot raised above heart level) or compression (using a compression wrap like MendMeShop’s shoulder compression brace  to help protect the injury and increase blood flow to the injury site)

Back injuries

👉Back injuries are common in the construction industry, due to heavy lifting and awkward postures that can lead to repetitive movements.

👉Symptoms of back pain include pain, numbness and tingling. Treatment options include rest, ice or heat using a product like the Back TSHELLZ . Always see a doctor if your pain is severe or you are having problems walking.

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs)

👉Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are injuries or diseases of the muscles, tendons and ligaments.

👉If you're working in construction or another demanding physical job, you may be at risk for MSDs.

👉The most common symptoms include: pain, swelling and stiffness in joints; muscle aches; fatigue; headaches; numbness or tingling in hands/feet/arms/legs; difficulty lifting objects due to weakness.

Eye injuries

👉Eye injuries are the most common type of construction injury. The most common types of eye injuries are abrasions, cuts and foreign bodies (wood chips, dust). Eye protection is required in most construction jobs.

👉Eye injuries can be very serious and permanent; therefore it is important to wear protective eyewear when working with tools or equipment that could potentially cause an injury to your eyes.

Minor cuts and abrasions

👉Use safety gear.

👉Prevent cuts and abrasions by using appropriate tools and wearing protective clothing, such as gloves or shoes with steel toes.

👉Treat minor cuts quickly with soap, water, and a sterile bandage; see your doctor if you have an open wound that does not heal within 7 days or gets worse after a few days' time.

Construction workers need to be aware of the risks they face, and trained to avoid them.

The most common injuries in construction are:

  • Back injuries - caused by lifting heavy loads or working at heights. The risk of back injury can be reduced by using mechanical equipment, such as lifts and cranes; wearing a harness while working at height; and taking regular breaks from heavy lifting tasks.
  • Fractures - these can occur when working with machinery or tools, or due to falls from scaffolding or ladders (which should be properly secured). To prevent fractures, use footwear with steel toes that provide support for feet on uneven ground surfaces; wear protective clothing such as gloves when handling sharp objects such as tools

Ways to protect yourself if you work in construction

Construction work is physically demanding, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't take care of yourself when you're on the job. In fact, if you can make sure you're wearing proper safety gear and taking breaks throughout the day, then you'll be able to reduce your risk of injury or illness. Here are some tips for staying safe in construction:

Wear safety glasses or goggles.

Wear safety glasses or goggles. Safety glasses and goggles are a must for construction workers, as they protect your eyes from dust and debris. The lenses should be marked as "impact resistant."

  • Wear long sleeves, long pants and boots when possible. This will help prevent cuts on the arms and legs if you fall against something sharp like metal or glass pipes that can puncture skin easily. This may also help protect you  if you accidentally bump into objects while working in tight spaces such as crawl spaces under houses.

Wear a dust mask, especially when working on projects with sawdust.

If you work in construction and are exposed to sawdust, a dust mask is a must. Dust masks protect your lungs from breathing in the tiny particles that can cause respiratory issues.

How do I wear my dust mask?

  • Place the elastic band around your head so that it sits just above your ears and under where your nose meets the rest of your face (this will help prevent any fogging on warmer days).
  • Pull down gently on each side of the nosepiece so there's enough room for breathing but not too much space between it and your face; make sure there's no gaps between where air comes into contact with skin around eyes/nose area because this could lead to irritation over time, you want everything nice and snug here!

Work in a well-ventilated area and consider using a fan to keep the dust down.

  • Work in a well-ventilated area and consider using a fan to keep the dust down.
  • Make sure your area is well-ventilated.
  • Consider using a respirator, especially if you work with chemicals or other materials that can be harmful to your health.

Avoid wearing loose clothing or jewelry that could catch on machinery, or allow debris to get caught on you and cause injury.

👉Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes.

👉Avoid wearing loose clothing or jewelry that could catch on machinery, or allow debris to get caught on you and cause injury.

Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes, but also make sure they are not torn or worn through to the point where they are no longer protective gear.

  • Wear long pants to protect your legs. Long pants will protect your lower body from cuts, scrapes, and bruises.
  • Wear closed-toe shoes to protect your feet. Closed-toe shoes are safer than sandals or flip flops because they won't catch on something while working and cause an injury to the foot or ankle area (which could lead to other problems).
  • Make sure that any protective gear you wear is in good condition and not torn or worn through so much that it's no longer effective at protecting you from harm!

Take frequent breaks so that your body can rest, including stretching exercises and exercises to keep your muscles loose.

👉Taking frequent breaks so that your body can rest, including stretching exercises and exercises to keep your muscles loose.

👉It's important to take regular breaks throughout the day. You should also make sure you're getting enough sleep at night.

👉 If you feel tired or fatigued during the day, it's likely because of poor sleeping habits or not enough restful sleep (i.e., waking up often during the night).

👉 In addition to being more productive when working on projects in general, taking frequent breaks helps prevent injuries from happening due to overuse of certain muscles in the body.

✔️If you're a construction worker, stretching is especially important because it keeps your muscles flexible and healthy, which prevents injuries on the job site.

✔️ Stretching is an important part of any routine. It allows your muscles to relax and helps them recover from the stress of exercise. Stretches also help to improve the range of motion in your joints so that you can perform daily activities more easily.

✔️ Construction workers can benefit from stretching both before and after work.

✔️Construction workers can be at risk for injuries that result from overexertion. Stretching before and after work can help prevent injuries and reduce the risk of injury.

One of the most important ways to stretch is through static stretches. A static stretch involves holding a position for 30 seconds or longer. These stretches help give you flexibility, improve blood flow and reduce muscle fatigue.

Here are some excellent stretches for construction workers and examples of exercises you can do during breaks:

Back Stretch

  • Stretch out your back by bending forward at the waist with hands on knees for about 30 seconds;
  • repeat five times before getting back into position again (you should feel this stretch across both sides of your spine).

Hamstring stretch #1

  • Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and face a wall or other sturdy object.
  • Lean forward against it until you feel a stretch at the back of one knee, then bend forward at the waist as far as you can while keeping both heels on the floor.
  • Hold this position for 15 to 20 seconds before switching sides and repeating on each side three times in total at least once a day if possible

Hamstring stretch #2

  • Stand on one foot with both knees slightly bent and toes pointing forward.
  • Slowly bend forward at the waist until you feel a gentle pull in your hamstring muscles.
  • Hold this position for 30 seconds, then switch legs and repeat three times on each leg.

Hamstring stretch #3:

  •  Sit on floor with legs straight out in front of you.
  • Bend one leg so the foot is flat on floor next to other leg, keeping knee straight.
  •  With hand on same-side thigh, gently pull heel toward buttocks until you feel a stretch in back thigh (hamstring).
  • Hold for 30 seconds and repeat on other side

Quadriceps stretch #1

  • Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold on to a sturdy object for balance.
  • Bend your right leg behind you and place your right heel on the inside of your left thigh.
  • Grasp your left foot with both hands and pull gently toward your buttocks until you feel a stretch in the front of your left thigh.
  •  Hold this position for 15 to 20 seconds, release and repeat on the other side.

Quadriceps stretch #2:

  •  Kneel on the ground, with one leg placed in front, and the other behind you.
  • Lean forward until you feel a stretch in the back thigh of your forward leg.
  • Hold for 30 seconds and repeat on other side

Standing calf stretch

  • Stand with both feet flat on the floor and arms hanging by your sides.
  • Bend one knee and place the other leg behind you with the foot flat on the floor.
  •  Push gently into the back leg until you feel a slight stretch in your calf muscle.
  • Hold this position for 20 seconds, then switch legs
  •  repeat three times on each leg
